Why didn’t anyone tell me…

Things I wish people would document, plus some original fiction. Weird, huh?

This month I picked up Restless mainly on good reviews. I thought it was good, there was a definite spy vs. spy feeling to it. The premise is that a mother starts telling her daughter that she (mother) was a spy just before WWII, and tells her all about it. The daughter’s story is mainly pointless, but it gives you the feeling that mundane day to day troubles of a single mother are not quite as bad as being hunted down or being forced to blackmail some political figure. And the sideline of the daughter’s sordid love life is just dumb. Maybe he threw it in to keep the attention of ladies. I don’t know, but I mainly wanted to flip ahead to get back to the spy story.

I picked up James Herriot’s Favorite Dog Stories because I liked his famous All Creatures series, but the fact is that this book is just excerpts from those, or is so far. I didn’t think I was re-buying content I already had, so I stopped reading that and switched back to Ender’s Game. I was just in the mood for a good dark book.
